Winter always reminds me of Alipore Zoo, and not just that—also iconic places like the Victoria Memorial, Science City, and Eco Park. Last Saturday, we visited Alipore Zoo, and it was a delightful experience!
A Brief History of Alipore Zoological Gardens
The Alipore Zoological Gardens in Kolkata, established in 1876, is one of the oldest zoos in India. It was initiated by Sir Richard Carnac Temple, who envisioned creating a zoological park in Kolkata.
The zoo officially opened during the British colonial period, with contributions from Indian aristocrats and British officials. Among the notable contributors was the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), who gifted animals to the zoo. Initially, it showcased animals donated by Indian nobility and international benefactors, eventually expanding to include species from around the world.
A famous resident of the zoo was Adwaita, a giant Aldabra tortoise believed to have lived over 250 years, making it a historical highlight until its passing in 2006.
